Welcome!

This wiki will focus on a global educational challenge in e-learning – assessment.

According to the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2007) “the primary purpose of assessment is to improve students' learning and

teachers' teaching as both student and teacher respond to the information that it provides” (p.39).

Page 40 of the New Zealand Curriculum (Ministry of Education, 2007) lists characteristics of effective assessment; assessment should:

  • benefit the students

  • involve the students (e.g. self assessment and peer assessment)

  • support teaching and learning goals

  • be planned and communicated

  • be suited to a purpose

  • be valid and fair

Assessment is a challenge in e-learning because it is so different to traditional assessment in the classroom.
There is often no face-to-face interaction, and there is a whole different learning environment for the students. Is the assessment in e-learning improving teachers' teaching and students' learning as it should? Is the assessment fair, valid, relevant, supporting the teaching and learning goals, involving and benefiting students? Assessment plays a huge role in any educational setting; it is often commented that assessment drives learning, and with e-learning on the rise we need to look into assessment in e-learning and be sure that the assessment strategies are meeting students' and teachers' needs.

This wiki will explore the why assessment is important in the e-learning setting, how assessment in e-learning differs to assessment in the traditional classroom, why it is a global challenge, some of the current approaches, and suggestions for improvement or questions to look into in the future. In doing this I hope to answer some questions surrounding assessment in e-learning today:

  1. Why focus on assessment?

  2. How does e-learning change assessment?

  3. How is assessment in e-learning different to assessment in the traditional classroom setting?

  4. What challenges arise with assessment in e-learning?

  5. What approaches to assessment in e-learning are currently being used?

  6. Do they need to change? If so why and how?
